SUMMARY:Social Connection is Medicine and Hope: Strategies to Reduce Social Isolation & Loneliness to Prevent Suicide in Later Life
DESCRIPTION:Social Connection is Medicine and Hope: Strategies to Reduce Social Isolation & Loneliness to Prevent Suicide in Later Life \nSpeaker: Kimberly Van Orden\, PhD \nDate: February 7th\, 2024 \nTime: 10-11:30AM PT / 11AM-12:30PM MT / 12-1:30PM CT / 1-2:30PM ET \nSocial isolation and loneliness (SIL) is one of the most common characteristics among older adults who die by suicide\, while social connection is protective: socially connected adults have greater than a two-fold reduction in suicide risk over the long-term. Despite the clear significance of SIL\, the U.S. healthcare system has not capitalized on social connection as preventive medicine: it is not routinely assessed and there are no clear evidence-based interventions. This presentation will discuss evidence-informed strategies to assess and intervene on SIL to prevent suicide and promote health & well-being in older adults\, including individual coaching\, behavioral activation\, volunteering\, and peer companionship\, as well as challenges in engaging older adults in those programs. \nLearning Objectives \nLearners who participate in this learning activity will be able to: \n\nDescribe at least two pathways (or mechanisms) whereby reducing social isolation and loneliness may reduce suicide risk in later life. \nIdentify at least three promising strategies to reduce social isolation and loneliness in older adults. \nIdentify at least two factors that may prevent older adults from engaging in programs to reduce social isolation and loneliness.\n\nPlease register HERE.

SUMMARY:Alcohol\, Cannabis\, and Other Substance Misuse Among Older Adults: New Findings to Inform Prevention and Interventions
DESCRIPTION:Alcohol\, Cannabis\, and Other Substance Misuse Among Older Adults: New Findings to Inform Prevention and Interventions \nSpeakers: Fred Blow\, PhD and Lynn Cooper \nDate: Nov 15th \nTime: 10-11:30AM PT / 11AM-12:30PM MT / 12-1:30PM CT / 1-2:30PM ET \nIn recent years\, the misuse of alcohol and other psychoactive drugs\, including opioids\, among older adults has been increasing. There is growing evidence that older adults today drink alcohol\, and abuse prescription and illicit drugs\, at higher levels than previously reported. New data suggest that combination of these problems places older adults at increased risk for negative outcomes\, increased health problems\, disability\, and suicide. This presentation will focus on the nature and extent of substance use and abuse in later life\, new research on the changing landscape of substance use and its consequences in aging individuals\, best-practices for screening and identification of late-life substance abuse\, and brief motivational intervention strategies targeting older adults who misuse substances. The webinar will also highlight key recommendations included in the SAMHSA Treatment Improvement Protocol (TIP) #26: Treatment of Substance Use Disorder in Older Adults. This event is hosted in collaboration with the Illinois Department on Aging (IDoA). \nLearning Objectives \nLearners who participate in this learning activity will be able to: \n\nunderstand the nature and extent of substance misuse among older adults;\ndescribe the unique risks of risky substance use and misuse among older individuals\, especially for those with comorbid mental health and cognitive problems;\nbe able to screen for alcohol and drug use among older adults using standardized instruments; and\nhave new knowledge about effective brief motivational interventions to address both alcohol and drug concerns in their clinical practice.\n\nPlease register HERE.

SUMMARY:Guidance on Best Practices in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Older Adults in Nursing Homes with Schizophrenia and Other Serious Mental Illnesses
DESCRIPTION:*This event has been postponed and a new date will be shared soon.* \nGuidance on Best Practices in the Diagnosis and Treatment of Older Adults in Nursing Homes with Schizophrenia and Other Serious Mental Illnesses \nSpeakers: Stephen Bartels\, MD\, MS; Marcia Hunt\, PhD; Susan Buehler\, PhD; and David Farrell\, MSW  \nDate: TBD \nTime: 10-11:30AM PT / 11AM-12:30PM MT / 12-1:30PM CT / 1-2:30PM ET \nThe appropriate care provision for people with schizophrenia and other serious mental illnesses (SMI) residing in nursing homes has been an important focus of research and policy.  People with SMI are often placed in nursing homes due to severity or chronicity of their illness\, but also due to limited housing and treatment options. Many older adults with SMI have psychosocial and psychiatric needs that are not well met in nursing homes. In response to these issues\, SAMHSA funded the E4 Center to complete a systematic literature review on the care of older adults with SMI living in nursing homes and assembled an expert panel to develop guidance and recommendations for best practices.  This presentation will review the historical background of the treatment for people with SMI in nursing home settings\, current concerns about diagnosis of SMI within a nursing home setting\, and describe recommendations for improved care within this guidance. \nLearning Objectives \nLearners who participate in this learning activity will be able to: \n\nRecognize the barriers to care that older adults with SMI encounter\, particularly for those who reside in nursing homes.\nDescribe legislation and regulatory policy that have affect the care that older adults with SMI receive.\nList recommendations for best practices for the diagnosis and treatment of older adults with SMI in the nursing home setting.\n\n

SUMMARY:Valued Social Roles in Older Adults with Serious Mental Illness
DESCRIPTION:Valued Social Roles in Older Adults with Serious Mental Illness \nSpeakers: Marcia Hunt\, PhD and Catherine\, H. Stein\, PhD \nPanelist: James Klasen \nDate: Wednesday\, May 3rd \nTime: 10am-11:30am PT / 11am-12:30pm MT / 12pm-1:30pm CT / 1-2:30pm ET \nSocial roles are broadly defined as the parts that we play within society. Roles can be relational—like daughter\, partner\, or friend—others more clearly communicate status\, activity\, or identity—like manager\, worker\, or teacher. Roles are also linked to different levels of acceptance or status within our communities. Our opportunities to hold various roles changes as we age and our circumstances change and we often gain and lose social roles over time. Role losses and gains can impact individual mental health\, life satisfaction\, and access to resources.  Presenters describe how the concept of valued social roles can shape our work with older adults coping with serious mental illness.  We focus on how people providing health care and assistance to older adults with mental illness can best partner with them to address the impact of social role losses and gains and work together to help these adults enact desired and valued social roles. This event is hosted in collaboration with SMI Adviser and the Illinois Department of Aging (IDoA). \nPlease register HERE.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Basics: Supporting Brain Health in Older Adults
DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Basics: Supporting Brain Health in Older Adults \nSpeaker: Ann Steffen\, PhD\, ABPP & Dolores Gallagher-Thompson\, PhD\, ABPP \nDate: March 3rd\, 2023 \nTime: 10am-12pm PT / 11am-1pm MT / 12-2pm CT / 1-3pm ET \nThe science and practice of brain health is developing at a rapid pace; there are now many ways to promote cognitive health and functioning in your middle-aged and older clients. This 2-hour workshop features clinical strategies that are (a) responsive to normative age-related changes in cognitive functioning and that also (b) support daily living that is consistent with personal values and life goals. Whether in psychotherapy\, integrated primary care\, or case management\, behavioral health providers can help middle aged and older adults understand cognitive aging\, engage in brain-healthy habits\, and support decision making related to completing a cognitive evaluation. The experience of cognitive aging is embedded within social contexts and environments. Thus\, this workshop guides clinicians through recommended strategies that are responsive to the needs of culturally diverse aging clients\, including within the context of telehealth. \nLearning objectives: \nBy the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe 3 psychoeducational practices that help client understand normal cognitive aging\nSelect 3 evidence-based strategies to support clients’ brain healthy habits\nIdentify 3 important practices that help clients successfully navigate health concerns\n\nPlease register HERE. \n

SUMMARY:Reframing Language in Behavioral Health Care: New Tools You Can Use
DESCRIPTION:Reframing Language in Behavioral Health Care: New Tools You Can Use \nDate: Wednesday\, January 18 \nTime: 11am-12:30pm PT / 12pm-1:30pm MT / 1pm-2:30pm CT / 2pm-3:30pm ET \nLanguage is a powerful tool that shapes how we see the world and other people. The words we use matter\, as they have the potential to be both empowering and harmful. This is especially true for words used to describe the experiences of people living with mental illness and substance use challenges. Dr. Moira O’Neil of the Framework Institute will open the webinar by providing an overview of the evidence behind the impact of language. Presenters will then introduce four new tools that outline outdated language\, updated language\, and why these changes matter. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion on how behavioral health care providers can use language to create a more inclusive and respectful environment for families\, older adults\, African Americans\, and LGBTQ+ populations. This webinar is hosted in partnership with the National Family Support Technical Assistance Center\, the African American Behavioral Health Center of Excellence\, the E4 Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Disparities in Aging\, and the Center of Excellence on LGBTQ+ Behavioral Health Equity. \nPlease register HERE.
