SUMMARY:Beyond the Basics: Enhancing Healthy Grief Reactions in Bereaved Clients
DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Basics: Enhancing Healthy Grief Reactions in Bereaved Clients \nSpeaker: Ann Steffen\, PhD\, ABPP & Dolores Gallagher-Thompson\, PhD\, ABPP \nDate: March 24th\, 2023 \nTime: 10am-12pm PT / 11am-1pm MT / 12-2pm CT / 1-3pm ET \nMiddle-aged and older adults experience the deaths of pets\, friends\, parents\, siblings\, and life partners. Other losses can be related to declining health\, moves\, and loss of roles that have been important parts of personal identity. This webinar features clinical strategies to support clients’ healthy grieving processes and management of daily life tasks. Screening and assessment tools are reviewed to aid clinicians in distinguishing normative grief reactions from prolonged grief disorder\, with implications for treatment planning and implementation.  An emphasis will be on grief therapy strategies that are responsive to the needs of culturally diverse aging clients\, including within the context of telehealth. Case examples are provided to support the efforts of practitioners from a range of disciplines (e.g.\, social work\, counselling\, marriage and family therapy\, nursing\, clinical psychology) in busy clinical practices. \nLearning objectives: \nBy the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe key differences between normative grief reactions and DSM-V-TR Prolonged Grief Disorder\nDiscuss the rationale and technique for at least three culturally responsive strategies to support healthy grieving\nIdentify at least 2 self-care strategies that promote healthy grieving\n\nPlease register HERE.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Basics: Addressing Chronic Pain in Older Adults with Mental Health Concerns
DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Basics: Addressing Chronic Pain in Older Adults with Mental Health Concerns \nSpeaker: Ann Steffen\, PhD\, ABPP & Dolores Gallagher-Thompson\, PhD\, ABPP \nDate: March 10th\, 2023 \nTime: 10am-12pm PT / 11am-1pm MT / 12-2pm CT / 1-3pm ET \nThere are a number of health conditions experienced by middle-aged and older adults that lead to persistent pain. This webinar supports providers as they help aging patients manage chronic pain and engage in daily living that is consistent with personal values and life goals. This presentation directs practitioners to help aging individuals apply the gate control theory of pain to regulate emotions\, thoughts\, and behaviors that increase pain perceptions and disrupt value-based living. These interventions are appropriate in both traditional psychotherapy and integrated primary care sessions.  Recommended clinical strategies can help patients to remember and use these skills\, with a focus on being responsive to the needs of culturally diverse older adults. \nLearning objectives: \nBy the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\nExplain the utility of the gate control theory of pain in clinical practice\nSelect 3 clinical strategies to support daily functioning for older adults with chronic pain\nIdentify resources for further professional development in chronic pain management.\n\nPlease register HERE.

SUMMARY:Beyond the Basics: Supporting Brain Health in Older Adults
DESCRIPTION:Beyond the Basics: Supporting Brain Health in Older Adults \nSpeaker: Ann Steffen\, PhD\, ABPP & Dolores Gallagher-Thompson\, PhD\, ABPP \nDate: March 3rd\, 2023 \nTime: 10am-12pm PT / 11am-1pm MT / 12-2pm CT / 1-3pm ET \nThe science and practice of brain health is developing at a rapid pace; there are now many ways to promote cognitive health and functioning in your middle-aged and older clients. This 2-hour workshop features clinical strategies that are (a) responsive to normative age-related changes in cognitive functioning and that also (b) support daily living that is consistent with personal values and life goals. Whether in psychotherapy\, integrated primary care\, or case management\, behavioral health providers can help middle aged and older adults understand cognitive aging\, engage in brain-healthy habits\, and support decision making related to completing a cognitive evaluation. The experience of cognitive aging is embedded within social contexts and environments. Thus\, this workshop guides clinicians through recommended strategies that are responsive to the needs of culturally diverse aging clients\, including within the context of telehealth. \nLearning objectives: \nBy the end of this webinar\, participants will be able to: \n\nDescribe 3 psychoeducational practices that help client understand normal cognitive aging\nSelect 3 evidence-based strategies to support clients’ brain healthy habits\nIdentify 3 important practices that help clients successfully navigate health concerns\n\nPlease register HERE. \n

SUMMARY:Reframing Language in Behavioral Health Care: New Tools You Can Use
DESCRIPTION:Reframing Language in Behavioral Health Care: New Tools You Can Use \nDate: Wednesday\, January 18 \nTime: 11am-12:30pm PT / 12pm-1:30pm MT / 1pm-2:30pm CT / 2pm-3:30pm ET \nLanguage is a powerful tool that shapes how we see the world and other people. The words we use matter\, as they have the potential to be both empowering and harmful. This is especially true for words used to describe the experiences of people living with mental illness and substance use challenges. Dr. Moira O’Neil of the Framework Institute will open the webinar by providing an overview of the evidence behind the impact of language. Presenters will then introduce four new tools that outline outdated language\, updated language\, and why these changes matter. The presentation will be followed by a panel discussion on how behavioral health care providers can use language to create a more inclusive and respectful environment for families\, older adults\, African Americans\, and LGBTQ+ populations. This webinar is hosted in partnership with the National Family Support Technical Assistance Center\, the African American Behavioral Health Center of Excellence\, the E4 Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Disparities in Aging\, and the Center of Excellence on LGBTQ+ Behavioral Health Equity. \nPlease register HERE.
