SUMMARY:Caregiving in Aging Families Series: Growing Caregivers into Successful Aging
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Sara Qualls\, PhD\, ABPP \nDates and Times: 1st\, 2nd\, and 3rd Friday of September from 11AM-1PM CT / 10AM-12PM MT to 10AM-12PM CT / 9-11AM MT  \nWhen caregiving challenges family systems in the later part of life\, individuals and families often struggle with practical and emotional burdens that are too often fraught with family conflict.  Families with long histories are expected to engage in novel work related to declining functional health of aging member(s) without training.  Not surprisingly\, many families find themselves overwhelmed with practical tasks that are emotionally loaded and interpersonally complicated.  In this three-part series\, participants from all mental health professions are invited to consider how the intersection of three major bodies of research on family development\, family systems\, and successful aging can help them guide family members toward more successful strategies to handle the very daunting tasks they face.    \n  \nLearning Objectives \n\nList three caregiver roles that require adaptation to manage caregiver burden and foster growth \nDescribe how multiple family members’ roles impact the caregiving experience \nExplain client resistance to self-care from a family systems framework \nDiscuss growth opportunities for caregivers as families interface with formal care systems  \n\n Please register here. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Preventing Firearm Injuries in Older Adults
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Chana A. Sacks\, MD\, MPH \nDate and Time: October 2nd from 10-11:30AM PT / 11AM-12:30PM MT / 12-1:30PM CT / 1-2:30PM ET \nAcross the US\, the rate of death from suicide is highest among older adults\, and 70% of these deaths are due to firearms. While interdependent factors drive suicidal ideation and suicide attempts among older adults including depression\, cognitive impairment and dementia\, medical co-morbidity\, and isolation\, whether a suicide attempt results in death is largely determined by the utilized means. Intentional overdoses are fatal in 2% of cases\, compared with firearms\, which are fatal 90% of the time. Therefore\, suicide prevention efforts specifically for older adults require a focus on firearm access and safety\, necessitating that clinicians who care for older adults are equipped with the skills needed to have accurate and culturally competent conversations with patients and families. This session will review the context related to firearm suicide among older adults and focus on concrete clinical skills to improve care for this population.  \nLearning Objectives: \n\nExplain the scope and impact of firearm-related injuries among older adults. \n\n\nDevelop a clinical framework to recognize older adult patients who may be at risk of firearm-related injuries. \n\n\nRecognize specific steps clinicians can take to mitigate the risk of firearm injuries among older adults.  \n\n Please register here. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:The Impact of Climate Change on Aging: Finding a Way Forward
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Lisa Brown\, PhD\, ABPP \nDate and Time: April 2nd from 10-11:30AM PT / 11AM-12:30PM MT / 12-1:30PM CT / 1-2:30PM ET \nThe looming threat of an unstable climate and uncertain future can contribute to a sense of existential dread and cause anxiety\, depression\, and feelings of helplessness about the future. Currently\, it is estimated that more than 58 million Americans are aged 65 years and older and that this number will continue to grow steadily to 83 million people by 2050. By recognizing the mental health implications of climate change on older adults and actively engaging in efforts to address these challenges\, mental health clinicians can significantly contribute to promoting mental health resilience in the face of environmental crises. \nLearning Objectives: \n1. Identify the mental health effects of climate change on older adults. \n2. Describe the relationship between the environment and mental and physical health. \n3. Explain the role clinicians can take to address adverse mental health concerns and facilitate climate mental health resiliency. \nPlease register here. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Interprofessional Ethics in Older Adult Mental and Behavioral Health: Psychology\, Psychiatry\, Social Work and Counseling Perspectives (Session 1)
DESCRIPTION:Title: Interprofessional Ethics in Older Adult Mental and Behavioral Health: Psychology\, Psychiatry\, Social Work and Counseling Perspectives (Session 1) \nDate: Friday\, July 24th \nTime: 10-11:30AM PT / 11AM-12:30PM MT / 12-1:30PM CT /1-2:30PM ET \nSpeakers: Rebecca Allen\, PhD\, ABPP; Matthew Fullen\, PhD; Dawn Hobdy\, MSW; Peter Rabins\, MD\, MPH \nLocation: Virtual (Zoom) \nSummary: \nMental health providers who work with older adults must navigate a complex landscape of ethical principles\, clinical judgment\, and interdisciplinary collaboration. As older adults often present with multifaceted medical\, cognitive\, and psychosocial needs\, clinicians must be equipped to recognize how ethical expectations manifest across diverse settings. Working with this population also requires an understanding of situations that are uniquely prevalent in later life. This dynamic and interactive panel brings together leading ethics experts from psychology\, psychiatry\, social work\, and counseling to discuss case-based examples illustrating how each discipline interprets and applies ethical standards. Over two sessions\, the panel will explore how differing professional perspectives can complement one another\, illuminate potential areas of conflict\, and ultimately strengthen ethical decision-making in the provision of mental health care for older adults.  \n Learning Objectives: \n\nIdentify ethical principles in older adult mental health service provision \n\n\nDescribe common ethical dilemmas that arise uniquely in the care of older adults  \n\n\nRecognize unique perspectives of each profession on applying ethical principles \n\n  \nREGISTER HERE \nPlease share with colleagues who would like to join! \nCE PENDING: Rush University anticipates offering 1.5 Continuing Education credits for this activity \nFor updates on all events\, please subscribe to the E4Center Newsletter and check back often! \n
