This presentation will review high-risk medications and problematic polypharmacy in older adults for non-prescribers. DESCRIPTION:Older Adults’ Protected Health Information: A Complex Ethical Case Discussion \nSpeakers: Rebecca Allen\, PhD\, ABPP\, Jacqueline Seitz\, JD\, and Christine Khaikin\, JD \nDate: Wednesday\, June 22 \nTime:  10am – 12pm PT/11am – 1pm MT/12- 2pm CT/1 – 3pm ET \nIn situations of medical complexity\, who has access to information about an older adult’s health information – including mental health and substance use history and treatment – can be a complicated issue. In this virtual training\, a complex older adult health situation will be presented. The legal issues related to the privacy of protected health information (PHI) will be reviewed by legal experts from the Center of Excellence for Protected Health Information (CoE-PHI). Dr. Rebecca Allen – a geropsychologist with expertise in the ethics of older adult health care\, will then consider ethical issues inherent in the case\, highlighting common issues in meeting the needs of older adults while assuring that the right people have the right information. A broader discussion of these issues will be moderated by the E4 Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health Disparities in aging. \nLearning Objectives: \n\nDescribe when and how the federal privacy laws apply to the Protected Health Information (PHI) of Older Adults\nIdentify ethical considerations related to PHI\, autonomy\, and paternalism\nRecognize how to access resources and technical assistance through the E4 Center and the CoE-PHI\n\nPlease register HERE. \nNote: Registration is managed by our partner CoE PHI.
